Family history says that Thomas was born on a ship coming from England to the United States. This was not true and shows how family tales can take a twist or turn . He was born in England (Lancastershire) Dec. 28, 1852, prior to sailing on the schooner Orient. According to his obituary he was nine months old when he came to the U. S.
His mother died the first year they were in Connecticut, which may help to explain the misconceptions in his birth. Thomas was a very successful Undertaker, as was his father John Scott, and a pilar of the community according to his Obituary in the Hartford Courant.
