West Virginia
1810-1870 census were included in the Virginia census.
- Using the "1900 rule" for place names, as of 1900, West Virginia was in existence and separate from Virginia, therefore, the census records should reflect "West Virginia" as part of the source name.
- On each of these pages, a separate Virginia place name should be inserted in the Place option. There are two ways I've seen thus far:
- 1.) An appropriate piped place name to the West Virginia county to at least indicate the original record name. This is a simple addition to provide clarity. -- [Example for Gilmer county: Gilmer, West Virginia, United States|Gilmer, Virginia, United States] as shown on Source:Gilmer, West Virginia, United States. 1860 U.S. Census Population Schedule.
- 2.) Changing the main place name pipe to include "(now West Virginia)". [Example: Gilmer, West Virginia, United States|Gilmer, Virginia (now West Virginia), United States]
- Add a qualifier:
- 1.) Including a Usage Tip template would be appropriate -- "(County) County was in Virginia at the time of the (Census Year) census. A West Virginia (Census Year) census category is provided for convenience. The county place page is in West Virginia for compliance with the "1900 rule"." -- [Example: "Gilmer County was in Virginia at the time of the 1860 census. A West Virginia 1860 census category is provided for convenience. The county place page is in West Virginia for compliance with the "1900 rule"."
- 2.) A bold statement "Note: Berkeley County was in Virginia in 1860. County place page links to West Virginia for compliance with WeRelate's "1900 rule". West Virginia 1860 census category below is added for convenience." as seen on Source:Berkeley, West Virginia, United States. 1860 U.S. Census Population Schedule may be used. This second version is more prominent.
