Hepsibah (Hepsy) Philpott, was born Feb 14, 1780 in Granville Co., Hillsborough District, North Carolina, was married to William Mathis on Nov 11, 1799, in Green Co., Kentucky, came to Iowa in 1834 and died in Des Moines Co., Iowa, July 11, 1867.

Hepsy was the daughter of William Philpott, a brother to Jose; these brothers were born in Maryland where their parents had settled before the Rev. War.

Hepsy was widowed in 1832. In October 1834, Hepsey Philpott Mathis abandoned her 1000-acre mountain farm on Brush Creek in Green County, Kentucky, and with 5 of her children-- William and wife Elizabeth Duke and their four sons-- David D., William J., James H., and Jose; Nancy and husband, John Duke; James; and Elizabeth (Betsey) and other relatives migrated by ox teams and covered wagons to Des Moines County, Iowa. Hepsey is in the home of her son, William Matthews, in the 1850 census in Danville, Des Moines Co., IA, age 70. She died there in 1867. --IowaGal 22:03, 9 April 2007 (MDT)
