Researching MacDonald from Scotland to Nova Scotia to Massachusetts. John "the Soldier" MacDonald left Arisaig, Inverness, Scotland 1791 on the Dunkeld and landed in Pictou, Nova Scotia. The family settled in Ardness and Bailey's Brook, Pictou county, Nova Scotia. My gggrandfather was born there. My ggrandfather Howard Hugh MacDonald was born nearby in Antigonish town, Antigonish county, Nova Scotia in 1866. He left there c1883 due to a Halloween prank gone bad. He eventually settled in Great Barrington, Berkshire county, Massachusetts.
