I was born near Fort Wayne, Indiana. Most of my ancestors come from Germany and the then German-occupied part of present-day France known as Alsace-Lorraine. While in graduate school at the University of Arizona, I met and married a Japanese American who was born in Hawaii. With the expansion of our family to include grandchildren, our total ancestry now includes Japan, the Philippines, native Hawaiians, Tahiti, other Polynesian islands, and England.
