Creating a Research Journal Table

This wiki widget is a research journal table that would collect key aspects in a simplified table format for on-page reading and an easier code layout to enter data into the log.

To use this table for your user page click on VIEW SOURCE in the upper right of this page, then highlight from the wiki notation <!-- COPY FROM HERE --> until the notation <!-- STOP COPY HERE -->.

Entry is simple if you understand one basic concept, the || or double-pipes are cell separators for each row. In other words, "| (Ex.) || 01 Jan 2010 || Find Census Entry for John Doe in US 1880 ||" code from the first example row below starts with a single-pipe for the row and double-pipes separate the cells for that row, see the shaded example row below to better understand the dreaded pipe cell separator. To add rows to your journal just remember each row is separated by "|-".

Description of the table headings/columns

  • Entry: A one-up number to the journal, allows for referencing previous journal entries by number versus date or other identifier.
  • Date: Choose the format best for your own record keeping.
  • Objective: Very short description of what you hope to accomplish during research event.
  • Respository: Where you are going to research to get your information.
  • Source: Short citation for your own reference.
  • Discovery: Short description of what you found, or did not, and where this will lead your research next.
