There are two couples named James & Hannah Foster in Winchester (Family:James Foster and Hannah Stetson (1) m. 1785, and Family:James Foster and Hannah Alexander (1) m. 1787). A copy of Winchester Births found on line Source:Winchester, New Hampshire, records of marriages, births, and deaths, 1733-1930, an alphabetized and typed compilation used by the city clerk to preserve the original records (Foster births viewable [1]), but contains several obvious errors that make it useless for the current invesigation:
In 1790 census here, one James has 1-0-4, so no sons, and one James has 1-2-2, so two sons. The James who married Hannah Stetson had two children recorded in Fitzwilliam before moving to Winchester (see Source:Norton, John Foote. History of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire, from 1752 to 1887, p. 575, and state records), Job and Rebecca, so this must be the 1-2-2. We assume Daniel is the second son. Sally, conflicts with Rebecca, so must belong in the other family. Hannah Alexander, according to Source:Temple, Josiah Howard. History of the Town of Northfield, Massachusetts, for 150 Years, p. 389, had a sister named Gratia, so one would suspect that child is hers. Source:Pierce, Frederick Clifton. Foster Genealogy, p. 749, lists the children of James and wife Hannah (Stetson), consistent with the analysis so far, and apparently having relied on information given by Rebecca. The rest are assumed to belong to the other family. Family:James Foster and Hannah Stetson (1): Job, Rebecca, Daniel, Susan/Susannah, Hannah 1794, Lucinda, Sarah, Asa, James 1804 |
