Transcript talk:Savage, James. Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England/v3p432

Defect 1

An article in NEHGR, p. 39:230, refutes claims that his wife is Mary Proctor, showing her to be Mary Fry. The erroneous claim originated in Source:Locke, John Goodwin. Book of the Lockes, which predated Savage by a few years. However, if Savage copied it from there, he ignored the data on the children found there (see defect 2). Locke also makes several errors on this family. --Jrich 05:05, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Defect 2

Savage has very poorly informed data on the children, since they are found in both the birth records of Dorchester, and in the baptisms among the church records. Mary, in particular was born in March 1664/65, and baptized in April 1665. Savage gives the baptism of Thomas correctly, but his birth two months early is also found in the records, as is Samuel's for whom Savage only gives the death date. --Jrich 05:05, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Defect 3 [19 October 2015]

The published vital records of Dorchester, give two records for the birth of John, s/o Thomas, one for 27 Oct 1667 and one for 27 Oct 1668. The online copy at familysearch.org is typewritten, so not original, but agrees with the published record (familysearch images p. 36 and p. 38; published record p. 10 and p. 11). The baptism in the church record is for Dec 1667 showing the 1667 record to be correct. Unfortunately, Savage's error of 26 Oct 1668 has been copied by some secondary sources, such as Pierce's Posterity of John Pers. --Jrich 02:53, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
