[add comment] [edit] Defect 1Savage says about the second John Brown of Reading, "He, instead of that former John of R. may have been the rep. or capt. or both." Which hints at his confusion, as he is unable to correctly identify which is which. The entire statement "He was capt. freem. 1679, rep. 1679, 80, 2, and 3; d. 1717 aged 81 [sic, 83 per town record]", given to the first, appears to belong to the second. Contrary to what Savage has said, the first died in 1714 and does not appear to have carried the title Capt. Further the first one had a second wife which bore him additional children, not mentioned by Savage, but mentioned in his will. Meanwhile, by applying the death date of the second to the first, Savage presumes the second one died before his wife in 1710, when he actually outlives her, and appropriately his will in 1717 has no mention of a wife.
