Watchers

Eaglehawk Police Court
Monday, 12th March.
(Before Mr M'Lachlan. P.M.)

Neglected Children.Frank Balderstone, a half caste Maori, was brought before the Bench as a neglected child. It appeared, from the statement of Sergeant Richards, that some time ago the mother of the child, who had been a resident of Red Jacket Gully, had gone off to Talbot with her husband, but previous to going she left the child with a Maori (John McWilliams --Wongers), a storekeeper in the gully, who she said was the father of him. The Maori accepted the charge, but neglected to take proper care of the child. The child took ill, and, through Sergeant Richards, was taken to the hospital, from whence he had recently been discharged. A summons had been issued for the father and mother, whom the sergeant had traced to Talbot, and who, according to the statement of Detective O'Neil, were to appear in Sandhurst on Thursday. The child was therefore remanded to gaol until that day.
