[add comment] [edit] ▼Caveats"Origin of a surname" is always more or less guess work. We can make guesses that "make sense" about how surname cognates developed and evolved, but its rare to be able to show that this evolution actually occurred. We can assume, for example, that "Edmondson", is a patronymic derived from "Edmond's son", but we can't usually know that based on factual evidence. It seems likely that "Edmondson" arises from "Son of Edmond", but it is rarely possible to show that this is actually the case in any given instance, and it is possible that the name arose in some other fashion. For example, "Edmondson" could be a corruption of "Edmondstone" or "Edmonton". That would still make make the surname "Edmondson" a cognate derived from "Edmond", but it would not necessarily mean the first holder of the surname was "the son of Edmond" or even related to someone with the given name "Edmond". Figuring out the likely origin and development of a surname is usually going to be a matter of opinion, and what is offered here concerning surname origin, is just that: one person's opinion. |
