I found something I've been looking for for years! The connection between my 3rd-great-grandparents, Thomas Arman and Charity Dowlin, who got married in Surry County, NC, in 1790. I'm almost sure he was a son of Teawalt Harman and she was a daughter of Henry Dowling. Now I find Teawalt Harman and Henry Dowling on the Shenandoah 30 years earlier! Now I just need to figure out how they both got to Surry, NC! By virtue of a Warrant from ye Proprietors Office date 20 Nov 1749 Surveyed for John Price four hundred and forty acres of land lying in Augusta County on the branches of ye Hawksbill (Creek). Assigned to Lewis Pence who obtained grant. Mungo Price was named as brother of John Price in a deed record for Jacob Pence. Jacob Pence, assignee of John Nicholson of Augusta Co., Va warrant 7 July 1749, survey 8 Dec. 1749, 262 acres on forks of Hawksbill, adjoining John Price and Mungas, his brother. Mungo Price, warrant for 300 acres surveyed 1749 on branches of Hawksbill. Grant received 8 Nov 1757, Northern Neck Grants K, p. 35. Another family residing in the area of Augusta County, which became Frederick County circa 1749 were Samuel Short and wife Ann Price, sister of John and Mungo Price. Samuel Short of Augusta hath informed there are about four hundred acres of ungranted land adjoining John Lienberger on a branch of the Hawksbill, Survey 4 January 1749. Adjacent to the Short family was an Edward Price, whom I believe to be related. Whereas Edward Price of Augusta County hath informed there are about 400 acres...whereon he now lives on a branch of the Hawksbill... 266 Acres Surveyed 20 November 1749. Also residing in the neighborhood was Solomon Ryan survey for 217 acres 4 January 1749. Solomon Ryan was a witness to the will of John Price Sr. in 1780 thus indicating apossible relationship. I am not sure if these men can be added to your list of early settlers on the Hawksbill, vicinity of South Shenandoah River. If you wish more information, please advise.
