According to Arthur (pg. 46), one origin of Abbott is the clerical office, the head of an abbey. However, Hanks (pg. 1) notes that due to the celibacy of the priesthood, it's unlikely this surname would apply to a cleric, but more likely to a person who worked for an abbott. Alternatively, it could have been applied negatively to someone who was sanctimonious, appearing as an abbot, but without the piety.
