Source talk:Whittredge, David A. English Origins of William Whitredge of Ipswich, Massachusetts

Watchers

Conclusions warrant examination [2 January 2012]

David A. Whittredge provides a wider view of the family of William Whittredge of Ipswich, adding 3 children born in England and another 5 born in Ipswich. The sources for identifying the additional individuals as being children of William are not new and it seems, Whittredge is forcing into one family those of the name despite the lack of evidence of a known relationship with William. All of those named, who resided in the Colony of Massachusetts are known individuals. Absent from this article is a discussion of the rationale used to identify these individuals as children of this William, where previous attempts had failed to come to the same definitive conclusions. By extension, the English origin data warrants peer review.

Of keen interest to me is identifying the Samuel Whittridge who was a soldier with Lathrop at Bloody Brook. Whittredge simply assigns that Samuel and his war record to William, the immigrant, without discussion. The clue to the identification of Samuel as a son, is the probate records of William's son Thomas, where "brother Samuell" is identified as being present at the time of his [Thomas'] verbal will. Now, it is highly probable that that Samuel is the Samuel Whittridge of Ipswich, who served with Lathrop, yet evidence linking these facts to the same person is lacking. Perhaps the NEHGR editors removed these references and/or discussion. In any event, care ought to be exercised before using this article as a source in creating additional relationships to this William.--Kpb2011 13:41, 2 January 2012 (EST)
