[add comment] [edit] Townships/Precincts 1840 Census Coosa County [28 October 2011]I found the following somewhere on the internet but unfortunately did not make a note of the actual source: "Kimbrel was the name of one of the ten precinct divisions of Coosa County at the time of the 1840 census - the first census of Coosa County. It was probably centered around the lands of Archibald Kimbrel, a settler in the county at the time of its founding and one called to jury duty for the first term of court in 1833. Judging by the names of some of the residents enumerated in Kimbrel precinct, John and Samuel Townsend, Mark Moore and others, it is possible that the area is now in northeast Elmore County. Elmore was formed in 1866 from Coosa and others. Later census and data identified these men with Brooksville, Seaman and Central communities now in Elmore County." The 10 precincts/townships/divisions used in this census were apparently: Clark, Jordan, Kimbrel, Lindsey, Nixburg, Rockford, Rockport, Soupatoy, Wall, and Wetumpka. Few of these divisions can be found on modern maps. Some may well be in other counties now. --LulaBelle 13:44, 28 October 2011 (EDT) |
