Transcription of Preface

The following text is reprinted from the Preface.

St. Alban's is the most ancient parish in the city of Worcester, with the single exception of that of St. Helen's. Its population in 1779 was 124; in 1891 it was 153.

The Parish Registers, unfortunately, only date back to 1630, and are contained in three volumes.

Vol. I contains sixty-seven parchment folios, each 10½ inches by 8½ inches, written on both sides, in good condition, and records Baptisms, Burials, and Marriages, from 1630 to 1726.

Vol. II contains forty-five parchment folios, each 11½ inches by 7 inches, written for the most part on both sides, in good condition, and records Baptisms, Burials and Marriages, from 1727 to 1754, and Baptisms and Burials only from 1754 to 1812.

Vol. III is of paper, of the uniform kind supplied by the King's printers, and contains the records of one hundred and fifty-four marriages from 1756 to 1812, the dates at which Lord Hardwick's and Rose's Acts, respectively, were passed.

All the entries of the seventeenth century have been carefully collated with the transcripts in the Bishop's Registry at Worcester, through the kindness of Mr. John H. Hooper, and several entries which do not appear in the Register Books have been supplied by these transcripts. These are now incorporated with the text, and for the sake of distinction they are printed in italics.

J. B. W., Knightwick Rectory, Worcester.
