[edit] Electronic Citation[edit] NotesAttributing authorship of this work is something of a challenge. The edition cited here is a reprint of an earlier work dating to 1831. The reprint was issued in 1895 under the hand of Reuben Gold Thwaites, incorporating information developed by Lyman C. Draper. Thwaites attributes the work to Alexander Scott Withers. However, according to Google Books, the work was "Largely written by William Powers and William Hacker, but prepared for publication by Withers, according to a statement made by a grandson of Powers. cf. L.G. McWhorter, The border settlers of northwestern Virginia, 1915." So, in the interests of simplicity, we'll ascribe the work to Withers, and leave it to the readers discernment who the real author was. |
