The Cherokees: A Population History is the first full-length study of the demographics of an American Indian group from the protohistorical period to the present.

Among those identifying themselves as Indians in the 1980 United States census, fully 17 percent, or more than 230,000, claimed they were Cherokees. Despite a tragic history, and because of a remarkable ability to adapt to Euro-American ways, the Cherokees became the largest self-identified tribe in the nation.
