[edit] Bibliographic CitationSummers, Lewis Preston. 1929. Annals of southwest Virginia, 1769-1800. Abingdon, Va: L.P. Summers. [edit] InLine Citation[edit] Electronic Source
[edit] Publication HistoryThis work was originally published in two volumes by the Kingsport Press, Kingsport, TN, in 1929. It has been subsequently reprinted by several organizations. The following is a partial listing of known editions.
[*Note: sine loco (s.l.) is a Latin phrase meaning "without a place" and is used in bibliographies to indicate that the place of publication of a document is unknown. [1] ] [edit] NotesThe index to this work is neither comprehensive nor accurate. Entries are included for which a diligent search of the page reveals no data. In other cases, information about a particular person contained on a particular page, is missing from the index. As a result, it is advisable to make use of the search capability of online versions of this work, such as found at Ancestry. Unfortunately, this seems to be available only on Ancestry, and the search engine there picks up many "false" hits (ie, picks up "John Smith", when the text gives "Michael Smith, John Fulkerson". Various reprints have reorganized some of the material contained in the original 1929 publication. For example, the 1992 reprint by Overmountain Press moved the illustrations to the end of Volume II, drastically changing the pagination. As a result, it is important to identify the specific edition when citing page numbers. Source:Summers, 1903 is a helpful companion work, covering much of the same area, (effectively "Old Washington County"). There is considerable overlap in coverage. In some cases, data provided in the two works is not in agreement with each other. For example, both works list the signatories of the Ebbing Springs Call, a highly significant list as it identifies many of the early settlers in the lower Holston watershed. Unfortunately, the two lists of signatories differ markedly from each other, with each version containing signatories missing from the other version.
