About South Dakota, Marriages, 1905-2013

[From Ancestry.com]
This database is an index to marriages that occurred in South Dakota between 1905 and 2013. This index was compiled from two sources. The first is from actual marriage certificates (covering 1905-49), and the second is from marriage certificates indexes created by the South Dakota Department of Health (covering 1905-14 and 1950-2013). From the actual marriage certificates, information that may be provided in this database includes certificate number, registration number, marriage county, marriage date, and names of husband and wife, along with their genders, residences, and ages. From the certificates index, information that may be found in this database includes certificate number, date of marriage entry into the index, marriage place, marriage date, and names of husband and wife, along with their ages and residences. Marriage records are important records for genealogists because they locate individuals in a particular time and place as well as provide details about them and their marriage. Statewide vital-record registration for births, deaths, and marriages began in South Dakota in July 1905. Some earlier marriage records may be found in the office of the register of deeds of a particular county. Published records of marriages exist for Minnehaha and Pennington counties. Divorce records were recorded statewide after 1905, but earlier ones may be at the clerk of the court in the appropriate county.

Some of the above information was taken from Laura Hall Heuermann and Marsha Hoffman Rising, "South Dakota," in Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources, 3d ed., ed. Alice Eichholz. (Provo, Utah: Ancestry, 2004).
