'The Sacramento Bee' is a daily newspaper published in Sacramento, California, in the United States. Since its foundation in 1857, The Bee has become the largest newspaper in Sacramento, the fifth largest newspaper in California, and the 27th largest paper in the U.S. It is distributed in the upper Sacramento Valley, with a total circulation area that spans about : south to Stockton, California, north to the Oregon border, east to Reno, Nevada, and west to the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Bee is the flagship of the nationwide McClatchy Company.[1] Its "Scoopy Bee" mascot,[2] created by Walt Disney in 1943, has been used by all three Bee newspapers (in Sacramento, Modesto, and Fresno).[1]

History

this follows from review of the Chronicling America information

The current name has been in place since 1908.

The immediately preceding title, running from 1890 to 1908, was The Evening Bee.
Directly preceding this was The Daily Bee, which ran from 1857 to 1890.
Directly preceding this was the short lived Daily California American (1856-1857).
Before this was another shortlived title The Daily State Tribune (1855-1856).
Preceded by a shorter lived title, The State Tribrune (1855-1855), before which no recorded titles appear.

In 1924, The Sacramento Star, was folded into The Sacramento Bee; this title does not appear to have a preceding title.
