Usage Tips

See the FamilySearch Wiki for more information on this collection.

This collection was created by developing an index from multiple microfilmed sources in the FamilySearch Library. This is typical with many of the State-wide vital records collections. The collection includes some information extracted from images of original records (such as town vital records books) and some information extracted from other sources, such as a compilation of vital records for a locality published in book form. Such books might include family records, bible records, cemetery records and census records, as well as the town's vital records.

The index is generally accurate, but examples can be found of places where conflicting information from more than one original source are presented. To evaluate the accuracy of conflicting data, it is useful to know the sources of the data presented in the online index. This can be done by:

  1. Copying the "source film number" on the index entry
  2. Opening a new FamilySearch page or tab, and selecting "Library Catalog" search
  3. Under "Search," select "Film numbers." Under "For" paste the "source film number" from the index entry.

The search results will indicate the source microfilm that was reviewed to create the index entry in Source:Maine, United States. Maine Births and Christenings, 1739-1900.

Information used to create the index was extracted from the following sources (there may be additional sources as well not yet listed here; this collection is updated as microfilm indexes are completed):
