Henry Cowan was born about 1733 in Scotland. When he was thirteen or fourteen, the family, parents and seven children, immigrated to America. Both parents died on the voyage. The children landed in Maryland where Henry remained. While living in Maryland, in 1777, he enlisted in the Revolutionary Army. He married the widow Temperance Armistead (or Armstrong) Robinson, ca. 1781. They had nine children. He received a patent for land in Rockingham Co., Virginia, in 1788, where he died, ca. 1829. Descendants lived in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and elsewhere. Includes the Pickering and other related families
