Description

In 1896, James A. Helman compiled a hand-written history and line of descendants for the family of George Smith (1720-1793) and Christiana Unknown (1721-1790) who were among the first settlers of an area near present day Emmitsburg in Frederick County, Maryland. Many of their descendants moved to Stark County, Ohio. This book was retained by family members and taken to family reunions in Canton, Ohio, where new information was recorded over the years by later generations.

Photocopies of the original book can be found in the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum and the Stark County District Library's Genealogy Department, both located in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

In 2007, descendant Leo Lutz transcribed, annotated and indexed the original book. A digital copy of the transcription can be found online at www.emmitsburg.net.
