The source states that the surname Surname:Barrat, with a characteristic meaning of "cunning" as in "skill of doing things", first emerged in England/Wales at the time of the wikipedia:Norman Conquest (11th Century). One descendent of this original name is noted as being Surname:Burritt.

In 16th Century (1550) England (Cambridge), a transition from Surname:Barrat to Surname:Baret was observed.

In 18th Century (1776) Great Britain, two apparently independent transitions from Surname:Barrat to Surname:Barret were observed. An additional observation of transition from Surname:Barrat to Surname:Barrett was observed as well.

In 19th Century (1801) England (Nottinghamshire), a transition from Surname:Barrat to Surname:Barratt was observed, which by 1818 had trasitioned (in the same individual) to Surname:Barrat.

A quotation: "The common ancestor of the Burritt family in America was William Burritt of Glamorganshire, Wales, who settled, with his wife Elizabeth, in Stratford, Connecticut where he was one of the earliest settlers, and where he died in the year 1651."
