Lower Norfolk County was divided into Norfolk and Princess Anne counties in 1691. Norfolk County became extinct in 1963 when it merged with the city of South Norfolk to form the city of Chesapeake. In the same year Princess Anne Couny became extinct when it consolidated with the city of Virginia Beach.
