A very detailed study of the Isleños of south Louisiana, from the recruitment by the Spanish government of Canary Islanders for the Louisiana militia (for protection against the nearby British territory) through the history of their numerous descendants up to the present day. Includes transcriptions of the passenger lists of the ships that brought the original immigrants and their families. Spanish surnames (though often pronounced differently) are very common today in Ascension and St. Bernard Parishes.
