The text's preface indicates that content was derived primarily from church and town records, "though earlier generations are taken from Savage's Genealogical Dictionary and Bond's Watertown"; correspondence with living relatives helped to provide information for later generations. One observation from correspondence was that there waa a near universal belief that a) "Bloss was a corruption of Blois" and b) "the family was of French extraction." A reference to Burke's Peerage in relation to "Blois" and "Blosse" was made as well.
