Commentary

This work was developed by the publishers to capture family history information from Cumberland County, PA. The preface notes that many of the accompanying sketches were prepared by Jeremiah Zeamer, based on material provided "from those immediately interested", but he is not given authorship on the title page. This work was prepared through subscription, and could be regarded as a "Vanity" publication. Nonetheless, as the publishers note in their preface that "they perpetuate information now [1905] readily obtainable, and hence lightly valued, but easily lost, the value of which is ot always apparent until too late." While such works seldom say anything ill of anyone, they do capture much information that has now been otherwise lost, just as the publishers predicted.

Portions of this work appear in later presentations. For example, Source:Huston, 1912 contains long passages that are virtually identical to those in Source:Genealogical Publishing Company, 1905. It is conceivable that the author of the former work (Rankin Huston) contributed this material to Source:Genealogical Publishing Company, 1905, but neither work acknowledges the other.
