Originally published in 1868. The book integrates official military records with the author's journal, and includes poems written by another member of the 7th Illinois Infantry, as well as company rosters. The author's journal entries provide details of weather, sometimes being mounted on donkeys, political attitudes of the men of the regiment, miles marched each day, etc.
