Place talk:Oshawa, Ontario, Ontario, Canada

What is the point of this source at the top of the Oshawa page? [25 October 2012]

Source: Atlas of Canada, Natural Resources Canada http://www.nrcan.gc.ca

This section of the Natural Resources of Canada website appears to be no more than a blog. There is no reference to Oshawa on that page today (25 Oct 2012). --goldenoldie 14:22, 25 October 2012 (EDT)

This is the site that I used to identify the type of place this is, and it's geographic location.

If you enter the site and select the Search topic you end up at the following search page: http://www2.nrcan.gc.ca/sr/index-eng.cfm

I don' t remember why I pointed to the current page, rather than the search page. There are instances that this site provides basic info on a place that is not referenced in Wikipedia, etc.

Feel free to make changes. You have been doing a great job on adding content to the place pages.

I recently reviewed and update a couple of hundred cemetery pages that I watch. It was not nearly as complex as what you are doing.

Thanks for your comments on my Ontario work.

It has been an interesting exercise and has taught me an awful lot. I left Ontario for England before the first round of municipal reorganization in the 70s, so the entire process has been "new learning". I really didn't know whether it should be included in a genealogical website, but the changes began more than 40 years ago now, and that's a generation sufficiently grown up to be able to want to track their family history. Many Wikipedia pages deal only with places since the changes occurred without a mention of the history, so I have practically been working two ends against the middle. Many of the local government websites have followed the same philosophy.

Once I found the Natural Resources Canada Database of Geographical Names I have used it for co-ordinates and also for official descriptions of places, e.g., dispersed rural community, compact rural community, etc. I only wish there were a simple way to note the source. Occasionally I have checked the Getty material on Ontario and found it....wrong.

I have been to Oshawa in the past ten years (for an Ontario Genealogical Society Conference) and driven through both its older and younger neighbourhoods.
