Zagatala is a city in northwestern Azerbaijan and the administrative center of the Zagatala District. It has a municipal population of 31,300 inhabitants and is located on the Tala River. The municipality consists of the city of Zagatala and the nearby village of Qazangül. The city is populated mostly by Azerbaijanis, but with significant minorities of the indigenous Avar, Lezgin, Tsakhur and Ingiloy peoples. Zazatala, population 35,000, is currently located in extreme northern Azerbaijan. It is northwest of the Sheki near the Tala River and lies near the borders of Georgia and Dagestan, Russia. Both Avar and Tsakhur (Dagestani) minorities live in the region. Teh A315 road connects it to Mingechaur and the Lagodekhi at the Georgian border. The Zaqatala region has Mulberry trees, which allow the people to preserve their tradition of silkworm breeding. The Zaqatala rayon is largely agricultural, including cash crops and sheep. Crops include tea, tobacco, and honey. The town contains a fortress built by the Russians in the 1830's. It was later used as a prison for the mutinous crew of the battleship Potemkin after the failed Russian revolution in 1905. Today the fortress is home to a military garrison. Other fortifications can be found in the nearby villages of Kelebola, Matsek, Yukhary Chardakhlar Sheitangala and Jar. The regional historical museum is located on 20 Yanvar Street.
