A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Wotton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"WOOTTON, a hamlet and a ville in St. Mary-de-Lode parish, Gloucestershire; adjacent to Gloucester city. Real property, £5,425. Population of the hamlet in 1851: 1,174; in 1861: 1,562,--of whom 578 were in the county lunatic asylum. Houses: 204. Population of the ville, in 1851: 56; in 1861: 91. Houses: 21."

Wotton Vill was considered a hamlet until 1885, but was also a civil parish from 1866 until 1885. It can be found on a map of Gloucestershire of 1900 as a separate place surrounded by Gloucester to the northeast of the city centre. It appears to have been made up of the lunatic asylum and, perhaps, houses for staff.
