Itchen Urban District was formed in 1898 from parishes that lay along the east side of the River Test opposite Southampton. The civil parishes were St. Mary Extra and Sholing plus the detached Itchen Stoke. This urban district remained until 1920 when the southern part of it was absorbed into Southampton itself. Itchen Stoke was located several miles north of the rest of the urban district (to the east of Winchester), and remained out of this annexation. Wikipedia states that in 1903 St. Mary Extra and Sholing were merged to create a civil parish of Itchen within the urban district. Woolston was another hamlet in the area which never had parish status.
