West Somerton was an ancient and civil parish in the West Flegg Hundred and from 1894 until 1935 in the East and West Flegg Rural District.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of West Somerton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SOMERTON (West), a parish in Flegg [registration] district, Norfolk; 8¾ miles NW by N of Yarmouth [railway] station. It has a post-office under Yarmouth. Acres: 1,189. Real property: £2,252. Population: 244. Houses: 59. The manor belongs to T. F. Grove, Esq. The living is a [perpetual] curacy in the diocese of Norwich. Value: £98. Patron: T. F. Grove, Esq. The church is thatched; and has a round tower, with octangular lantern."

In 1935 the civil parishes of West Somerton and its neigbour East Somerton joined to form the civil parish of Somerton.
