History

The town of Waverly was formed in 1880 from part of the town of Dickinson. Half its area was lost to the town of Altamont (the present-day town of Tupper Lake) in 1890. The St. Regis Falls area was a major lumber producer, and the Northern Adirondack Railroad was built from Moira, connecting the area to the Ogdensburg and Lake Champlain Railroad.

The Azure Mountain Fire Observation Station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
