Research Tips

According to the master thesis of T.D. Goertzen, Verkhna Khortytsya was formed from the combination of two neighboring villages of the Chortitza Colony - Chortitza and Rosenthal - and is now a suburb of the city of Zaporizhzhia.

"Verkhna" means "Upper", distinguishing this settlement from Nyzhnia Khortytsia, or "Lower" Chortitza (Nieder Chortitza in the original German).
