Nyzhnia Khortytsia was founded in 1803 as the Mennonite village Nieder Chortitza within the Chortitza Colony. The village was originally settled by German-speaking Mennonite immigrants from Prussia. Early census records (in German) can be found in Die Niederländisch-Niederdeutschen Hintergründe der Mennonitischen Ostwanderungen, by B. H. Unruh.
