Udon Thani is one of the four major cities of Isan (Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen known as the "big four of Isan"), Thailand's north-eastern region, an area the size of England with Wales or roughly half the size of Germany. The city is the capital of Udon Thani Province and with a population of approximately 130,531 is the 7th largest urban settlement in the country.
