From Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Memorial Inscriptions pre-1855, vol 5, by Alison Mitchell, published 1996 by the Scottish Genealogy Society, Edinburgh, Scotland:

"The parishes of Twynholm, or Twinam, and Kirkchrist have been united since 1641. The parish now extends in a strip, 10 miles north to south and about 2 miles wide, from the hills by Balmaghie to the Dee estuary. Apart from the north quarter it is well wooded and fertile farmland.
"A parish church existed at Twynholm by 1174. The present church is a replacement of 1818, surrounded by the burial ground. The village cottages have been built on the slope beside and below it, on the banks of the Auchengassel Burn. There is a 20th century cemetery a half mile along the road to the east."
