From the Gazetteer for Scotland:

"Twynholm lies to the west of the River Dee, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Kirkcudbright. The parish church of Twynholm dates from 1818, while just over a mile to the southeast is the Tudor-style mansion house of Cumstoun (formerly Compstone), built in 1829 for the Maitland family. Also southeast lie the ruins of Cumstoun Castle within whose walls the soldier-poet Alexander Montgomery composed 'The Cherrie and the Slae' in 1595."

Twynholm was located in the parish of Twynholm in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
