Thuxton is a small village and former civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, six miles northwest of Wymondham and five miles southeast of Dereham. The village retains a church, St Paul's, which has a monthly service.

The village is located just off the B1135 Wymondham to Dereham road, and is served by a station on the Mid-Norfolk Railway "heritage" line (run by volunteers as a tourist attraction).

Thuxton is also listed as a deserted medieval linear village, with twenty-nine tofts (the site of a house or farm) having been located.

From 1894 until 1935 Thuxton was a civil parish within Mitford and Launditch Rural District. In that year the civil parish was abolished and the land was transferred into the neighbouring civil parish of Garveston.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Thuxton from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1871-72:

"THUXTON, a parish, with a [railway] station, in Mitford [registration] district, Norfolk; on the East Anglian railway, 5 miles SSE of East Dereham. Post town: Hingham, under Attleborough. Acres: 1,102. Real property: £1,703. Population: 132. Houses: 28. The Hall manor belongs to Lord Wodehouse; the Waces manor, to the Rev. H. Lombe. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value, £260.* Patron, F. O. Taylor, Esq. The church is tolerable. Charities, £5."

Research Tips

  • Ancestry.co.uk has the following lists as of 2018 (UK or worldwide Ancestry membership or library access required). With the exception of the index to wills these files are browsible images of the original documents. The files are separated by type and broken down into time periods (i.e., "Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1535-1812" is more than one file). The general explanatory notes are worth reading for those unfamiliar with English parish records.
