| Thakeham Rural District was created in 1894 following the Local Government Act 1894. It was a local government administration designed to cover the needs of a number of rural parishes in the western part of Sussex. The district neither bordered the English Channel nor the County of Surrey.
As will be seen on the map, the parishes of Ashington (2) and Thakeham (13) each had two detached sections in addition to the principal one.
The rural district was abolished in 1933 and most parishes were transferred to Chanctonbury Rural District, with some eastern ones going to Horsham Rural District and Worthing Rural District. The specific destination for each parish is given in the table below.
