Until 1 April 1996 Stockton was one of four districts in the relatively short-lived county of Cleveland, which was abolished that year; it is now a unitary authority in the ceremonial County Durham. The Borough of Stockton on Tees is a unitary authority covering the part of the original town which is north of the River Tees. The remainder of the borough is part of the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
