Steyning East Rural District was formed in 1894 following the passing of the Local Government Act of that year.

In 1928 Steyning East lost the parishes of Fulking and Poynings to Cuckfield Rural District and the parishes of Hangleton and West Blatchington to Hove Municipal Borough.

In 1974 with the introduction of municipal districts in Sussex, most of the Rural District was transferred to the Horsham District.
