St. Albans Abbey is one of the four historic parishes which make up St Albans, along with St Michael's, St Peter's and St Stephen's. The civil parish covered a relatively small area of the town centre. The civil parish existed until 1913 when it was merged with the urban parts of the other three parishes to make the city of St Albans.

The parish church is the former Abbey church, which was purchased by the town at the dissolution of the monasteries. The church was elevated to the status of Cathedral in 1877, with the diocese of St Albans covering the historic counties of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
