A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of South Duffield from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870-72):
- "DUFFIELD (South), a township in Hemingbrough parish, [East Riding of] Yorkshire; on the river Derwent, between the Selby and Market-Weighton and the Selby and Hull railways, 4½ miles E by N of Selby. Acres: 1,280. Real property: £1,932. Population: 236. Houses: 41.
From 1894 until 1935, South Duffield was located in Riccal Rural District. In 1935 the Riccal Rural District was abolished and its place was taken by Derwent Rural District. At this time South Duffield merged with its neighbouring civil parish, Cliffe-cum-Lund, under the name Cliffe.
Derwent Rural District continued to administer the local area until the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974. Since 1974, South Duffield has been in the Selby District of North Yorkshire.
Historically, South Duffield was in the ecclesiastical parish of Hemingbrough in the wapentake of Ouse and Derwent.
