A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Smalesmouth from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"SMALESMOUTH, a township in Gaystead parish, Northumberland; on the North Tyne river, 7 miles WNW of Bellingham. Population: 211. Houses: 29."

Smalesmouth was a very large township of 13,500 acres in the ancient parish of Simonburn before 1811. In 1811 Greystead (or Gaystead), a part of Simonburn, became an ancient parish in its own right. Smalesmouth became a separate civil parish in 1866, but in 1958 was absorbed back into the civil parish of Greystead. From 1894 it was part of Bellingham Rural District.
