Research Tips

Shyroke/Schirokoye was founded in 1789 as the Mennonite village Neuendorf within the Chortitza Colony. The village was originally settled by German-speaking Mennonite immigrants from Prussia. Early census records (in German) can be found in Die Niederländisch-Niederdeutschen Hintergründe der Mennonitischen Ostwanderungen, by B. H. Unruh.
