Research Tips

Schönwiese was founded in 1789 as a Mennonite village within the Chortitza Colony. The village was originally settled by German-speaking Mennonite immigrants from Prussia. Early census records (in German) can be found in Die Niederländisch-Niederdeutschen Hintergründe der Mennonitischen Ostwanderungen, by B. H. Unruh.

Latitude and longitude are approximate, based on an 1833 map of the Chortitza Colony.
